Microsoft will finalize Win10X at the end of the year: Win32 applications are temporarily not supported

Microsoft also showed Windows 10X running on Surface Neo. Because Microsoft has shifted its focus to single-screen devices, Surface Neo has been postponed until at least 2022.

Microsoft has confirmed that the Windows 10X operating system will be the first to land on single-screen devices. It will probably start with low-priced PCs and compete with Chromebooks in the education market. Windows 10X for single-screen devices is still expected to reach RTM (release to manufacturer) status in December 2020
RTM is an industry term that refers to a product that is ready to be installed on a new system.

In other words, when Windows 10X reaches the RTM status internally in December 2020, it will be considered finalized and fully functional or ready to be shipped to the manufacturer. Please note that this does not mean that Windows 10X will be available to consumers in December. After finalizing the modular operating system in December, Microsoft will begin to provide services for the operating system and fixes and improvements for the spring of 2021. It is not known whether Microsoft also plans to ship Windows 10X to Insiders for actual feedback and testing.

Windows 10X is expected to be promoted as a lightweight product comparable to products such as Chrome OS. Microsoft will not bring Windows 10X to existing hardware. On the contrary, if you want to try a new operating system, you need to buy a new affordable device. It’s worth noting that Microsoft originally wanted to use a new virtualization technology called "VAIL" to achieve virtualization support for Win32 applications. It is reported that Microsoft has removed the necessary technology required by VAIL, which means that this operating system can only Run UWP and PWA natively.

However, corporate customers will be allowed to use the new Internet-based services to run traditional Win32 applications on Windows 10X.

Windows 10X will also pre-install the online version of Office applications such as Word PowerPoint Excel Teams Skype and so on. We understand that an improved version of Windows 10X with VAIL Win32 virtualization and Surface Neo support is expected to be launched in 2022.
