Windows 11 KB5029263 update issues with Microsoft Defender glitches

Post by barry777 »

The Windows 11 KB5029263 update failed to install on many systems, and some users claim the security patch broke the new "Microsoft Defender" app. KB5029263, the August 2023 "Patch Tuesday" update, was designed to fix an SSD slowdown affecting a large number of devices, but installation issues have caused confusion among users.

Microsoft pushed the KB5029263 update to all devices not in the beta program on August 8. Targeted at the August 2023 build of Windows 11, the update aims to fix SSD issues, corruption of certain display and audio devices, and glitches with widgets and virtual private networks. However, since the update is a mandatory security patch that is scheduled to be downloaded and installed automatically, some users have experienced installation failures.

Many users reported that the August 2023 update failed to install on their systems. Some users have indicated in the Feedback Center that the Windows 11 KB5029263 (August 9) update fails to install and cannot be successfully uninstalled. Some users have even noticed a persistent "red dot warning" appearing on the taskbar and lingering to go away.

Other users have reported that the cumulative update process gets stuck at 96% on their systems, and attempts to reboot the system have no effect as the update process starts over and gets stuck again. Some users also highlighted issues with File Explorer, where explorer.exe would freeze, making it impossible to open folders and files. A user wrote in a Feedback Hub post: "On August 12, 2023, my system was automatically updated with KB5029263 and KB5028948 patches, after which I noticed that Explorer was not working properly, and I could not open folders and files, Although the application loads, it cannot be used."

Another notable one is the Microsoft Defender app, a new hub for managing all devices associated with Microsoft 365. Some users have reported that Microsoft Defender cannot be launched after the update, showing the error message "Unable to sign in to Microsoft Defender". It's unclear how the cumulative update broke Defender, but it may have something to do with the security fixes included in the update.

A Microsoft engineer has confirmed that the company plans to address issues with the Microsoft Defender app with an update in the coming days.

In addition, Microsoft's update also affects its own Surface Pro X devices. The update allegedly caused some Surface Pro X owners to lose access to the Snapdragon X24 LTE modem. In Device Manager, users see the error message "The device cannot start. (Code 10)" when they click on the LTE Modem tab.

As a user described in a Feedback Hub post: "In Device Manager, it says: 'The device failed to start. (Code 10)', followed by '(Operation failed) The requested operation was not successful.' at the most recent timestamp Under the "Events" tab, I see 'Device installation requested' and under it it says 'Device QCMS\VEN_QCOM&DEV_0489&SUBSYS_MSWW8180\3&33c1b731&0&0 requires further installation'."

Unfortunately, although some Surface Pro X users have tried reinstalling the drivers and flashing them with the drivers provided by Microsoft's website, the issues caused by the update have not been resolved.

Microsoft has yet to comment or respond to the reported issues. The emergence of this update problem has aroused widespread concern, and many affected users hope that Microsoft can quickly resolve these problems to ensure the stability and normal operation of the system. If you have encountered a similar problem, it is recommended that you temporarily avoid installing this update until Microsoft releases a fix. At the same time, you can also follow Microsoft's official channels to get the latest information on solutions to these problems.
