GK3V Firmware update and boot image customization

Post by Jokeyth »

!!! Update a bios is easy, but it is also easy that something can go wrong transforming your device in a very expensive brick, do everything at your risk and remember me or anyone here will be responsible if something will mess up your device !!!

Everything started with my wish to have a nice "second" working desk in my house on the italian alps. So I have installed my minipc on a gaming desk and on the back of a wonderfull wide screen monitor. The first issue to be solved was that now the minipc was hided from view (although it is quite nice in terms of design) as well as it was a bit annoying to look for the power button to swith it on. So the first mod was to drill a hole on one side of the plastic case, make some soldering to connect to a female audio jack the two pin of the power button. Second step to buy a monitor lift stand with a usb hub plus a power button and connect the minipc to this external button. Not sathisfied I also wanted to customize the boot logo and here the procedure I have followed and that I like to share for the one who wants to try on their own (by the way you can find some picture of the final results in this post as well as a video showing the power on and the customization here: https://1drv.ms/u/s!Ap8nuWA51LCugScDhNo ... G?e=YGghbe)

Coming back to the firmware customization procedure here is what you have to do:

STEP1: Download the latest firmware for the GK3 device here:

or here (on a github)

https://github.com/bootuz-dinamon/GK3V- ... 1Z-001.zip

STEP2:

extract the zip file you will get on STEP1

you will have on the extracted folder several files, please have a look at the word guide to flash a usb key for the upgrade procedure which comes with the downloaded package: BIOS_EC Upgrade guide_uefi.doc

STEP3:

you shall get a free software that simplify the firmware modding and that allows you to modify the boot logo. Please note that it is possible just to change the boot logo for the silent splash, you will have to change on the firmware setting enabling the silent boot.

The link for the software can be found here: https://protectli.com/wp-content/upload ... 6.exe_.zip but for simplicity you can find it also attached to this post.

STEP4:

Prepare the image you prefer and you like the most when you switch your PC on! Resize it at the maximum size of 800x600 pixels and with no more than 256 colors. Last but not least the image shall be a non-compressed bitmap file.

STEP5:

Follow the instruction you will find on this site where you can also get the software of STEP3.

https://protectli.com/kb/how-to-customi ... ?intsrc=eu

STEP6:

Copy the new firmware on the USB disk you have prepared following the instruction you have found in STEP2.

In case you want to experiment to flash the firmware not from a USB stick but directly from Windows you can use the AMI tool you can find from this link: https://www.ami.com/bios-uefi-utilities/#aptiov, but I am still old fashion and I rather prefer the old dos look and feel for these operations. Do not blame me, I am kind of old and I have started playing with PC at the age of the commodore 64 (the original one).

STEP7:

reboot and do not forget to modify on the firmware setting to enable the silent boot otherwise you won't see the new logo coming out!

I hope this post will help you to have a nice boot splash and enjoy even more to be part of the minipc family!
