Markings for machines going to the UK as from Jan 1 2023

Post by rogerinfrance »

Hi you may not be aware that as from the January 1 2023 any electrical items must be marked with the new UK standards sign. It will be illegal to ship to or sell any item not marked and tested to UKCA currently the same as CE however from December 2025 it will be obligatory to have this tested and marked accordingly. In fact should items be on sale without said UKCA then it can be reported to the Ofcom and the item removed from the market and obviously prosecutions would likely follow! For the transition period, Jan1 2023 until Dec 2025 a label affixed or a note included to the effect that it does in fact comply.
Do contact OFCOM for further information. It will be an offence under UK law to sell an item not compliant nor correctly marked!
If it is electric, be it a battery powered lamp or a huge radio transmitter it has to comply. It gets worse, it gets worse, if it is going to NI then it has to comply with both. Also take note that you cannot attain a UKCA if the power plug is not compliant with the 1363/A plug with the correct rating fuse, or unless the item is a moulded plug with the power supply incorporated. If it has a 230V power supply then with a switchmode power supply then the spacing for the AC power side to the low voltage side must comply with UK / EU spacing. This is clearly very different to US 115V 60HZ spacing. To put CE or UKCA label on a wall wart that covers 115v 60 Hz to 230V 50 hz that has only the 115v spacing will be a criminal offence.
I encountered this on a portable radio charger plug transformer wall wart and the supplier was not very pleased, he had to get a supply of conforming items and scrap all the units supplied. The vendor did not want to know!
