AMR5 Mini PC - AMD Does Not Support This PC's GPU Anymore?

Post by JeZxLee »

Hi,

I tried to update the video driver, but AMD does not support this device's GPU anymore?
Is the above true?
Let me know, thanks!

I downloaded AMD's "Auto-Detect and Install for Windows® 10/11*" tool, and it was able to find the latest driver for the GPU, which is Adrenaline 22.5.1, or 30.0.15021.11005 as shown in the Device Manager driver info, which is dated 4/28/2022. However, after installing it and restarting I noticed some things were acting funny, including on this site, including my pointer disappearing. So, I rolled the driver back, but it went WAY back to a version from 2006, not the one I originally had installed, which was from December 2021. Unfortunately, I restarted the unit with that really old driver installed and, when it started back up, the unit wouldn't work with my monitor, so I ended up connecting the AMR5 to my TV in order to be able to reinstall the driver it originally had, which seems to work best.

For reference, what I have installed currently is in the snapshot below. Again, it seems more stable than the updated, 4/28/2022 driver the AMD tool offers, as referenced above, though you might have better luck with the latest one.

Hi,

Sorry for your trouble...
I just bought this PC a couple of days ago.
The GPU on this PC is no longer supported by AMD.
This is not good.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'no longer supported'. They're still releasing up to date drivers for it.

Hi,

AMD auto detect software recommends using an older driver version.
There is a newer driver version that does not support this PC's GPU.
Very disappointed.

This is normal, Jesse. new drivers are often prepared for new graphics cards, and the most important thing about drivers is that they are "stable". So having a stable driver is the best.

Something to keep in mind also, and this isn't anything against AMD or the AMR5 system - not all graphics drivers are stable for every system. Typically, a graphics driver company like AMD does limited testing to make sure the driver works, but they don't have access to all of the hardware that goes into a system. That's why most graphics vendors recommend getting the driver directly from the system manufacturer, as AceMagician has the ability to test a specific driver release and qualify it for working with the rest of their hardware.

I've seen this with Dell, HP, and Lenovo systems, not just my Mini PCs. And as much as I love to run the latest updates for systems, there's definitely a lot of risk involved with running untested hardware. And you get some really weird results, like Gabe mentioned. Personally, I've seen my system stutter and completely freeze for half a second, every two seconds, when using a recent "stable" release of graphics driver.
